Smart cards are usually in the form of a credit card (but YubiKeys can also have a smart card function) and can be programmed for different applications. For example, employee ID cards that are used for access control to the building can also be used for authentication on the computer. In principle, a distinction is made between contact-based and contactless authentication in smartcard based authentication.
